The Challenge

Task: Maneuvering

How does it relate to marine science?
This relates to marine science because there may be times where your ROV needs to swim through a cave and it needs to maneuver in and around it.

Time limit: 3 minutes

Dimensions and masses
Hula-hoop
Mass: 195.72 g
Length: 61 cm

Thoughts and observations
We will need to make the ROV compact so that nothing hangs and potentially hits the hula-hoop. We will be able to make the ROV itself pretty big because there seems to be a lot of space in the hoop.

Task: Coral Reef Restoration
How does it relate to marine science?
If the area where coral is dying, you can move the coral to a new healthy place

Time limit: 4 minutes

Dimensions and masses
Mass: 40.24 g
Height: 20 cm
Width: 7 cm

Thoughts and observations
We will need to make our ROV able to pick up a lot and have an efficient way of doing it, so that the object does not fall out of our grasp.

Task: Specimen Collection
How does it relate to marine science?
To catch creatures and bring them up to the surface so you can study them

Time limit: 4 minutes

Dimensions and masses
Mass: 57.83 g
Height: 4 cm
Length: 25 cm

Thoughts and observations
We will need to make our way of picking things up a secure way so we are able to grasp the octopus well enough without dropping it. However, we should not make what we use to grab it to big or it might weigh us down in other challenges.

Task: Oil Well Repair
How does it relate to marine science?
You can protect the environment by stopping oil from leaking.
Time limit: 3 minutes

Dimensions and masses
Mass: greater than 200 g
Height: 8 cm
Width: 13 cm

Thoughts and observations
We will have to come up with an efficient way of hooking this object and have the hook be curved enough so that it can’t slide off of our hook.
